DailyCandy distributes 3 million e-mail subscriptions via 28 editions, including 13 daily editions covering New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Dallas, London, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Philadelphia, Miami, Seattle, and Everywhere (a national edition featuring online picks) and 15 weekly editions. DailyCandy is a unit of Comcast Interactive Media.
Situation or Problem
In early 2009 DailyCandy embarked on a major website project. This project was bigger than any they had done, with very tight deadlines and they needed help. Until then, DailyCandy's entire focus had been on email. Their website was little more than an email archive. This was foreign territory for them. Nine Summer was brought in to help implement the new design, to consult with their technical and product teams on process and development methodologies and to provide seasoned engineering expertise.
What We Did
Nine Summer provided program management, combining project management with business decisions to ensure that we built the right set of features while staying on budget and on time. We broke down the overall project into manageable steps that everyone from editorial to product to development could understand and believe in. We provided engineering expertise to rapidly integrate with 3rd party systems like Endeca. We designed the content taxonomy and the user experience (UX) for DailyCandy's rich corpus of content.
Results
- The website project was delivered on time, on budget and on spec.For such a large project to come in on time and on budget was a first for DailyCandy.
- DailyCandy innovated their delivery method for working on large projects.
- We continue to provide CTO level leadership to DailyCandy.
