Situation or Problem

The SmartDocs team had a vision for mobile information retrieval and decision support in hospitals and other clinical environments. They needed a product and technology partner to help turn that vision into a product definition and working software. Health care IT systems are as diverse and varied as the hospitals they serve. SmartDocs needed a product that could access billions of electronic medical records (EMRs), and make it all work on PDA/smart phones. The timing of this opportunity was such that SmartDocs needed a working prototype very quickly.

What We Did

Nine Summer was involved early on in the initial product definition meetings. This ensured that the product vision was well matched with the realities of what was possible and what was practical. As the vision solidified Nine Summer was able to develop a product architecture, road-map and implementation plan. The software was built using specialized search technology combined with a Ruby on Rails application stack and libraries to create iPhone and Android specific applications.

In less than 100 days, Nine Summer implemented a working prototype. The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule and the feature set exceeded the original expectations. Building on this success the project moved forward with a live pilot deployment in Bridgeport Hospital. The doctors using the SmartDocs pilot report improvements to patient outcomes every day.
